The Apple iPhone
Capping literally years of speculation on perhaps the most intensely followed unconfirmed product in Apple's history -- and that's saying a lot -- the iPhone has been announced today. Yeah, we said it: "iPhone," the name the entire free world had all but unanimously christened it from the time it'd been nothing more than a twinkle in Stevie J's eye (comments, Cisco?). Sweet, glorious specs of the 11.6 millimeter device (that's frickin' thin, by the way) include a 3.5-inch 480 x 320 touchscreen display with multi-touch support and a proximity sensor to turn off the screen when it's close to your face, 2 megapixel cam, 4GB or 8 GB of storage, Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR and A2DP, WiFi that automatically engages when in range, and quad-band GSM radio with EDGE. Perhaps most amazingly, though, it somehow runs OS X with support for Widgets, Google Maps, and Safari, and iTunes (of course) with CoverFlow out of the gate. A partnership with Yahoo will allow all iPhone customers to hook up with free push IMAP email. Apple quotes 5 hours of battery life for talk or video, with a full 16 hours in music mode -- no word on standby time yet. In a twisted way, this is one rumor mill we're almost sad to see grind to a halt; after all, when is the next time we're going to have an opportunity to run this picture? The 4GB iPhone will go out the door in the US as a Cingular exclusive for $499 on a two-year contract, 8GB for $599. Ships Stateside in June, Europe in fourth quarter, Asia in 2008.

Easy there Chris.
It looks a bit clunky to me. Kinda big. It'll take a lot to get me to ditch my t509.
rektide @ Jan 9th 2007 1:20PM
no. i understand the necesity of patents. thats why i specified monopoly. many people use patents defensively. apple otoh will almost certainly do everything in their power to keep multi touch to themself.
Thomas @ Jan 9th 2007 1:24PM
I get 560x315. That's not too bad.
jet @ Jan 14th 2007 10:36PM
very hard to out do nokia.. see the n800.. n95,n96i all have bigger market share...
sucks it coming out on cingular, should've chosen better company like t-mobile...
Berkana @ Jan 9th 2007 3:14PM
Here's a primer on the use of patents "defensively"; what that means is that the patent gives you the legal right to sue people who infringe on your patent (using it without your permission if you chose to license it; the patent holder has the legal right to not license his invention, and to produce the invention exclusively). If you don't defend your patent by doing so, your patent is as good as nothing. That's all a patent is good for.
By that definition, the patent holder can't help but "monopolize" the patent; he (or the company that holds the patent) is the sole rights holder to the patent and can profit without competition from the patent for the duration of the patent's protection period; anyone who wants to use it would have to license the technology from the sole provider of it (a.k.a. a monopoly) if the patent holder choses to make it available for licensing, which they are under no obligation to do so. The technologies like what you see in the iPhone must have taken tons of work to prepare to Steve Jobs' standards of perfection. I don't blame them for wanting to keep it to themselves. They certainly earned it.

this is not an ad page, it a comment page, loser.

Evildude42 @ Jan 9th 2007 12:51PM
Hmm, Trademark problems anyone? Besides that, once we see a picture, I may want one. If its at least as functional as a nano.
Chris @ Jan 9th 2007 2:31PM
They made a deal with Cisco to use the iPhone name -

ethan @ Jan 28th 2007 11:19PM
new phone- and still 5 years behind
Sv @ Jan 10th 2007 8:22AM
Well, do they give you a wipe with this phone? I hate when they are fingerprints on my screen when I am watching a movie.
iThink @ Jan 10th 2007 4:12PM
I want it
Jacqueline @ Jan 11th 2007 7:03AM
actually, CISCO has sued them - no deal was made before the announcement, but Jobs went ahead anyway and apparently never got back to Cisco.
http://blogs.zdnet.com/BTL/?p=4266&tag=nl.e589
And Apple says - first time the name is used for a cellphone - but if it has wifi, which it does, then it's really close to the iPhone that Linksys sells. (voip anyone?) and I wouldn't bank against cellphones and voip converging in the near future. Cisco holds a very good hand here.
Therealkilroy @ Jan 14th 2007 11:45AM
Cisco may have lost its chance to make money off of Apple's recognizable "i" product line. After all, when ever anybody see's an iPod, iDock, iTune, iPhoto we all think Apple. So even if Cisco had the name we would all assume iPhone is Apple. Who is trying to screw who out of profits here? Obviously the world associates iProducts with Apple.
However it appears the boat left without Cisco on this one. Good try though:

Danny Klumb @ May 25th 2007 5:28PM
I'm sure that they'll have trademark issues as well ... but these are going to sell fast, and even if they run out you can always try to win one I guess. Came across this youtube video, this concierge company Red Butler always gives away crazy stuff.

Static Thinkbox @ Jun 21st 2007 6:35PM
Who looks like the dumbass now? This Sim card slot IS on top of the phone in an ejectable tray that you need to use a paper clip to push the eject button. The battery is an internal component and the inside of the phone can't (or shouldn't) be accessed. If you need a new battery, Apple will have to replace it for you. So before you start calling people names, you should definitely KNOW what you are talking about.
tinaturner @ Sep 27th 2007 7:47AM
This is the best phone ever created by the mankind. Congrats Apple

Pretty Dope!
Apple Newton @ Jan 9th 2007 12:54PM
Wow! An update to the ROCKR! Cool. Oops....(akward.)
Tommy @ Jan 14th 2007 3:04AM
This isn't anything like the ROCKR. It has iTunes. That's basically it.
This has far more capacity, video capabilities (Widescreen at that), is touch-sensitive, runs OS X, etc...
Taz @ Jan 9th 2007 12:56PM
Unless it's a slider, it looks like it's going to be touch sensitive screen. That's going to be the big 'make or break' as far as I'm concerned.
I've never liked those things (SE P800/900 with flap removed, T-Mobile MDA, etc) - the touch screen is a nightmare to try and dial numbers from - a proper keypad can't be beat.
However, Apple do have a hell of a rep for doing real nice hardware and interface design, so if anyone can successfully implement it in a non-sucky way - it's them.
